API 5L X52 Pipe: Specifications, Applications and Buyer’s Guide

API 5L X52 is a 52 ksi minimum-yield-strength line pipe grade, but grade alone is not enough for procurement. This guide explains PSL1 vs PSL2, manufacturing routes, RFQ details and pre-shipment inspection.

Table of Contents

API 5L X52 is a line pipe grade used in oil, natural gas and water transportation systems. The “52” represents a minimum yield strength of 52,000 psi, or approximately 360 MPa. It does not define the finished pipe’s pressure rating, wall thickness or manufacturing process.

For buyers, writing “API 5L X52 pipe” on an enquiry is not enough. You must also specify the PSL level, dimensions, manufacturing method, service environment and inspection requirements. This guide explains how to select, specify and inspect X52 line pipe before placing an order.

What Is API 5L X52 Pipe?

API Specification 5L establishes manufacturing, material, inspection, testing, marking and traceability requirements for seamless and welded steel line pipe. API published the 47th edition in June 2026, adding and updating requirements in more than 15 technical areas, including CO₂ transportation. Buyers should state the contractually required edition instead of assuming that every project uses the latest version.

X52 is the US customary grade designation. Its corresponding SI designation is L360. Both indicate the same nominal strength level, but the complete material designation may also include a PSL level and delivery condition.

API 5L X52 may be supplied as:

  • Seamless, or SMLS;
  • Electric welded, including HFW/ERW;
  • Longitudinal submerged arc welded, or LSAW;
  • Helical submerged arc welded, or HSAW/SSAW.

These manufacturing routes are not interchangeable by default. The approved project specification, diameter, wall thickness and service conditions determine which process is acceptable. Seamless pipe is not automatically superior to welded pipe.

Where Is API 5L X52 Pipe Used?

X52 line pipe is commonly considered for:

  • Oil and gas gathering lines;
  • Natural gas transmission and distribution;
  • Crude oil and refined-product pipelines;
  • Produced-water and water-injection lines;
  • Onshore pipelines and approved offshore applications.

X52 offers higher minimum yield strength than Grade B or X42. It can provide a practical balance between strength, availability, field weldability and total installed cost.

However, API 5L X52 is not a corrosion-resistant alloy. Wet gas, H₂S, CO₂, chlorides or produced water may create internal corrosion or cracking risks. Such projects may require corrosion allowance, chemical inhibition, internal lining, external coating or sour-service qualification.

API 5L X52 Mechanical Properties

The following values are central to X52/L360 identification:

PropertyAPI 5L X52 Value
Specified minimum yield strength360 MPa / 52,200 psi
Specified minimum tensile strength460 MPa / 66,700 psi
Corresponding metric gradeL360
Product specification levelsPSL1 and PSL2

Exact permissible ranges and test requirements depend on the PSL, pipe body or weld, delivery condition, wall thickness and applicable edition. Purchase documents should therefore reference the required standard rather than treating a short online table as the complete acceptance specification.

These strength values are also not the allowable working pressure of the finished pipe. Pressure design depends on outside diameter, wall thickness, design factor, temperature derating, corrosion allowance, longitudinal joint factor and the governing code.

For example, ASME B31.4 addresses design, materials, testing and operation for liquid pipeline systems. Gas transmission and distribution projects may use a different governing code, such as ASME B31.8. Material strength is only one input in the engineering calculation.

API 5L X52 PSL1 vs PSL2

PSL1 and PSL2 are product specification levels. They should not be described simply as “normal quality” and “high quality.”

PSL1 establishes the basic API 5L requirements. PSL2 adds tighter control over chemical composition, carbon equivalent, strength ranges, toughness, manufacturing, inspection and traceability. Delivery condition is also part of the PSL2 grade designation, such as X52N, X52Q or X52M where applicable.

The practical differences include:

RequirementPSL1PSL2
Chemical controlsBasic specified limitsTighter limits and carbon-equivalent controls
Strength controlMainly minimum requirementsDefined minimum and maximum ranges
ToughnessAs required by the order or applicable provisionsMore specific fracture-toughness requirements
TraceabilityRequired to the applicable levelMore extensive identification and traceability
NDT and documentationStandard API 5L requirementsAdditional or stricter controls where applicable

PSL2 does not automatically mean sour-service qualified. A wet-H₂S project should identify the applicable sour-service standard, environmental conditions, hardness limits and required HIC or SSC testing. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 addresses metallic-material suitability for defined H₂S-containing oil and gas production environments, but compliance still depends on the stated service conditions.

API 5L X52 Seamless vs ERW vs LSAW

Choose the manufacturing method according to the approved technical specification—not only the lowest unit price.

Seamless pipe is often considered for smaller diameters, heavier walls or projects that prohibit a longitudinal seam. ERW/HFW pipe is widely used in small- and medium-diameter gathering or transmission systems and can provide consistent dimensional control.

LSAW is commonly considered when projects require larger outside diameters and heavier wall thicknesses. HSAW/SSAW may also be suitable when the project specification permits it.

Regardless of the process, buyers should check forming controls, weld inspection, hydrostatic testing, dimensional tolerances and traceability. The relevant question is not simply “Is it welded?” but “How was the pipe manufactured, tested and accepted?”

API 5L X42 vs X52 vs X60

GradeMinimum Yield StrengthGeneral Selection Consideration
X4242 ksi / 290 MPaLower-strength design requirements
X5252 ksi / 360 MPaBalance of strength, sourcing and weldability
X6060 ksi / 415 MPaHigher-strength pipeline designs

A higher grade is not automatically safer or less expensive. Higher strength may reduce the calculated pressure-design thickness, but corrosion allowance, handling loads, minimum practical thickness and project rules may determine the final wall.

Changing the grade can also affect the welding procedure specification, procedure qualification record, consumables and preheat controls. Any substitution between X42, X52 and X60 requires written engineering approval.

What Should an API 5L X52 RFQ Include?

A complete API 5L X52 RFQ should include:

  • Required API 5L edition;
  • X52/L360 grade, PSL and delivery condition;
  • Seamless, ERW/HFW, LSAW or HSAW/SSAW;
  • Outside diameter or NPS;
  • Specified wall thickness;
  • Quantity and fixed or random length;
  • Plain, beveled or other approved end finish;
  • Internal lining and external coating;
  • Transported medium and design temperature;
  • Impact-test temperature and acceptance criteria;
  • HIC, SSC, hardness or additional NDT requirements;
  • EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 inspection document;
  • Third-party inspection, marking and packing.

Example:

API 5L X52 PSL2 ERW pipe, NPS 8, 219.1 mm OD × 8.18 mm WT, fixed 12 m length, beveled ends, 3LPE coating, Charpy testing at −20°C and EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.

This is an RFQ example, not a universal project specification. Final requirements must follow the approved pipeline datasheet.

How to Inspect API 5L X52 Before Shipment

Start by matching the purchase order, MTC and pipe markings. Confirm the API edition, grade, PSL, delivery condition, manufacturing route, heat number and dimensions.

Then review the reported chemical composition, carbon equivalent, yield strength, tensile strength, elongation and applicable impact results. The heat number on the pipe must remain traceable to the correct inspection document.

Check OD, wall thickness, length, straightness and bevel geometry. Review hydrostatic and NDT records required by the order. For coated pipe, verify coating thickness, holidays, end cutbacks and visual condition.

This document-to-product check is more reliable than confirming only that “X52” appears on the MTC.
