Specify API 5L X52 LSAW Pipe With 3LPE by separating the base-pipe and coating requirements. Use this guide to check PSL, dimensions, testing, traceability and RFQ documents before ordering.
Table of Contents
An RFQ stating only API 5L X52 LSAW Pipe With 3LPE leaves too much open to interpretation. The mill cannot accurately price the pipe until the PSL, delivery condition, dimensions, coating class, testing and documentation are confirmed.
For a comparable quotation, specify the base pipe and external coating as two connected quality packages.
What Is API 5L X52 LSAW Pipe With 3LPE?
API 5L covers steel line pipe for pipeline transportation systems. X52, also designated L360, has a specified minimum yield strength of 52,000 psi or 360 MPa. It is a material grade, not the pipe’s pressure rating.
LSAW means longitudinal submerged arc-welded pipe. This manufacturing route is often considered for large-diameter or heavy-wall transmission pipelines. Our separate API 5L X52 pipe guide explains the grade, while the LSAW steel pipe guide covers manufacturing and dimensional considerations.
The 3LPE system combines an epoxy primer, adhesive layer and polyethylene topcoat. It protects the external surface from corrosion and handling damage. It does not control internal corrosion.
Specify the Base Pipe First
Confirm the Grade and PSL
State the contractually applicable API 5L edition. API published the 47th edition in June 2026, but an existing project may specify another edition. According to the American Petroleum Institute, API 5L addresses manufacturing, inspection, testing, marking and traceability for seamless and welded line pipe.
The order should identify PSL1 or PSL2. For PSL2, specify the complete grade and delivery condition where applicable, such as X52N, X52Q or X52M. See our PSL1 vs PSL2 comparison before choosing between them.
Requirements for sour service, offshore service, CVN impact testing, hardness or longitudinal strain capacity must be added when required by the project.
State Exact Dimensions and Ends
Provide the actual OD, wall thickness, length and quantity. A useful RFQ line looks like this:
610 mm OD × 12.7 mm nominal wall × 12 m fixed length, beveled ends, 500 pieces
Also confirm whether the order uses nominal or minimum wall thickness, plus corrosion allowance, dimensional tolerances, bevel angle, root face and end protection.

Define the 3LPE Coating Requirements
API 5L does not automatically include 3LPE. The purchase order must specify a separate coating standard.
ISO 21809-1:2018 covers plant-applied three-layer PE and PP coatings for welded and seamless steel pipeline pipe. Your RFQ should define:
- Coating standard and class;
- Design and operating temperature;
- Required total thickness;
- Surface preparation and profile;
- Pipe-end cutback length;
- Holiday and adhesion testing;
- Repair procedure;
- Field-joint coating compatibility.
There is no single coating thickness suitable for every order. Thickness depends on the applicable standard, pipe diameter, coating class, installation conditions and project specification. For comparisons with FBE and 3LPP, see our pipe coating selection guide.
Inspect the Pipe and Coating Separately
Base Pipe Inspection
Verify heat-number traceability, chemical and mechanical results, OD, wall thickness, length, straightness and pipe ends. Review the applicable hydrostatic test record and the specified UT or RT records for the LSAW seam.
Coating Inspection
Confirm surface cleanliness and profile, application temperatures, total coating thickness, cutback dimensions and repaired areas. Holiday detection identifies coating discontinuities. Peel adhesion, impact, indentation and cathodic-disbondment testing should follow the ordered coating standard and ITP.
A critical acceptance rule is that an MTC cannot replace the coating inspection report.
Check the Shipment Document Package
| Document | What It Confirms |
|---|---|
| Mill Test Certificate | Grade, heat number, chemistry and mechanical results |
| Dimensional Report | OD, wall, length, straightness and ends |
| NDT/Hydrostatic Records | Specified weld and pressure testing |
| Coating Report | Preparation, thickness, holidays and adhesion |
| Packing List | Pipe numbers, dimensions and quantities |
| TPI Release Note | Independent acceptance when ordered |
Pipe markings, MTCs, coating records and packing lists should remain traceable to one another.

FAQs:
1. What Does X52 Mean in API 5L?
X52 identifies a line-pipe grade with a specified minimum yield strength of 52,000 psi, approximately 360 MPa. It does not state the pipe’s allowable operating pressure.
2. Is API 5L X52 the Same as L360?
Yes. X52 and L360 indicate the same strength level in US customary and SI designations. PSL2 orders may also include a delivery-condition suffix.
3. Is LSAW Suitable for X52 Line Pipe?
Yes. LSAW is an accepted manufacturing route for suitable API 5L orders, particularly large-diameter or heavy-wall pipe. The project specification must permit the process.
4. Does API 5L Automatically Require 3LPE?
No. API 5L controls the base steel pipe. The coating standard, class, thickness and inspection requirements must be specified separately.
5. What Standard Applies to 3LPE Coating?
ISO 21809-1 is widely referenced for plant-applied three-layer polyolefin coatings. Projects may instead specify another national, client or project standard.
6. Does 3LPE Protect the Inside of the Pipe?
No. 3LPE protects the external steel surface. Internal corrosion requires a separate material, lining, coating or chemical-control strategy.
7. Which Tests Apply to 3LPE-Coated Pipe?
Typical controls include surface-profile checks, coating-thickness measurement, holiday detection and adhesion testing. The exact scope must follow the coating standard and approved ITP.
8. What Documents Should Be Requested Before Shipment?
Request the MTC, dimensional report, applicable NDT and hydrostatic records, coating inspection report, packing list and TPI release note when third-party inspection is ordered.
